Random Freezes While Playing Games on Windows 10

'I have recently upgraded Windows 10 from 32 bit to 64 bit and now my games are randomly locking up on me. The game freezes, with the sound looped (very short sample, so it just sounds like buzzing), and sometimes resumes after a second or two, other times stays locked up. The same happens with several different games, and not in particularly performance-heavy spots. I really hope someone here can help me with some ideas. Thank you very much in advance!!'

How to Fix Windows 10 Computer Freezes When Playing Games

Unfortunately, the freezes occur almost randomly and without much useful feedback. This is not only frustrating but also makes it a lot harder to troubleshoot.

But the good news is, it can be fixed. This post provides you with four useful solutions to solve the freezing computer when playing games.

Solution 1. Cleanup Temp Files and Junk Files

To remove and clear useless junk files or big files, you can refer to professional file cleaner software for help.
If you need a simple guide, you can directly refer to clean up junk files for help.

Solution 2. Run System File Checker and Fix the Freezing Computer

Step 1. Right-click the 'Start' button and select 'Command Prompt (Admin)'.

Step 2. Type sfc /scannow into the Command Prompt window and press 'Enter' to run a full system scan.

Leave the Command Prompt to run – this may take between 5-10 minutes. After the process is finished at 100%, if everything goes well, you would get the message 'Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.' If you see a message 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them', it tells you that you have successfully repaired missing or corrupted system files in Windows 10 with SFC.

Solution 3. Updating all Device Drivers to the Newest

According to users, random computer freezing while playing games usually appears after Windows 10 update. And the reason might be incompatibility of hardware and drivers. To correct it, just update all device drivers.

Step 1. Click the 'Start' menu and click the 'Settings' tab.

Step 2. Click 'Update & security'.

Step 3. Select 'Windows Update' in the left pane and click 'Check for updates' (make sure you have an active Internet connection).

Solution 4. Perform a System Restore or a Clean Install of Windows 10

If your computer still freezes frequently and randomly when you are playing games or doing something else on Windows 10, you may try to either perform a system restore to roll back to the previous version or do a clean install of Windows 10 to find a fix.

Notice:
Either a system recovery or a clean install of Windows 10 will erase all the data you have created on your PC. To avoid this issue, please back up your data in advance. Here, EaseUS free backup software is available for download to help. Here, if your PC freezes and cannot boot properly, click to learn how to backup data without booting into Windows.

Download and install EaseUS free backup software, then follow the steps below to back up your computer.

Step 1. Open EaseUS Todo Backup and select'File Backup'.

You may have a large amount of vital data to be protected as time goes on, such as documents, pictures, music, and videos, etc. It is always a good habit to have a backup on a regular basis. File Backup is one of the best choices for you to get over unexpected data loss.

Step 2. Select the files that you want to back up.

Step 3. Select a destination to save your backup of the selected files.

You'd better create the backup file in some other storage media or in some other drive. If not, there may be a risk of the backup file getting corrupted or destroyed.

Advanced backup settings are useful when you want to create a flexible and automatic backup plan.

The schedule is to create an automatic backup plan.

Backup options are to edit the advanced parameters.

Image-reserve strategy is to reserve the limited image as per image retention rule.

Advanced backup settings are for reference only but not a prerequisite for backup.
